The Appalachian pipeline was renegotiated as part of the debt ceiling legislation the president signed early this month.
White House adviser John Podesta recently defended President Biden’s decision to sign legislation permitting the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). The proposed 303-mile natural gas pipeline is currently being constructed in the Appalachian Mountains and was a major part of negotiations between Senate leaders and Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Last year, Senator Manchin was promised support for the pipeline in exchange for his vote for 2022’s Build Back Better Act, which passed.
However, the project had to be reapproved after construction permits were revoked due to violations against water and environmental regulations. Environmental activists have opposed President Biden’s decision to reapprove the permits for construction.
“MVP was on its way to being permitted anyway,” Advisor Podesta said following an event announcing funds for sustainable upgrades to federal buildings. “I think MVP was inevitable.”
